About The Renewables Indaba

The Renewables Indaba, co-located with the renowned Africa Energy Indaba, hosts the private sector comprising commercial buyers and sellers, together under one roof, to do solar and wind energy business deals.

The 2024 theme is ‘Accessing the African Opportunity’. The Renewables Indaba will bring together manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, service providers, investors, developers and operators from around the world to discuss the latest trends & innovations, developments and provide the potential to meet new customers.

Expanding the Africa Energy Indaba footprint from a strong renewables base to give added impetus to the Africa solar and wind opportunity, the Renewables Indaba will benefit from the already established IPP & PPA Conference, a fixture of the Africa Energy Indaba week, attracting Independent Power Producers, Governments, Developers, African utilities, Regulators, Energy Intensive users, End users, and many more.

The Renewables Indaba will provide meeting and networking opportunities as well as sponsorship/exhibition opportunities to meet your companies specific marketing and business development needs.

The Continent has vast resource potential in wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal energy and falling costs are increasingly bringing renewables within reach. Renewable energy deployment has grown in the last decade, with more than 26 GW of renewables-based generation capacity added. Solar and wind have contributed significantly to this growth as they are now the cheapest generation technologies on many Africa Countries.

Given the demand for Solar & Wind developments in Africa, the African Energy Indaba together with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and SolarPower Europe, and supported by GET.invest*, will be launching the inaugural Renewables Indaba as an official event within the Africa Energy Indaba week.

The event will focus on key topics in the African renewables revolution, including green hydrogen, renewables value chains and manufacturing, mobilising finance, upgrading African electricity grids, and decentralised renewable energy. It will bring together project developers, financiers and key international and national-level decision makers to unpack the considerable opportunities and look at the hottest renewables markets across the continent.

*GET.invest is a European programme which aims to mobilise investment in renewable energy, supported by the European Union, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Austria.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), if all African energy-related development goals are achieved on time, the continent could be generating 80% of its power needs from solar, wind, hydropower and geothermal. The IEA Sustainable Africa Scenario further predicts that Africa’s electricity demand could increase 75% by 2030 with renewables, mainly solar photovoltaic, accounting for most new capacity additions aimed at meeting it.

Africa’s solar energy potential is immense!

Key World Bank data analysed from Statista shows:

Africa has the world’s greatest solar energy potential

Investment is needed to harness this solar energy potential in Africa

Africa is one of the regions most at risk from climate change, although it only emits 4% of greenhouse gases emissions globally

The Renewables Indaba Conference

The Forum agenda will explore the broader renewable energy, wind and solar solution potential in Africa. Focused sessions on wind power development, utility solar, rooftop solar, off-grid, mini-grid and energy storage opportunities and solutions will be feature renowned African and international expert speakers. These speakers will share their insights and knowledge around the business opportunities available for the benefit of the Continent.

GWEC is a member-based organisation that represents the entire wind energy sector. The members of GWEC represent over 1,500 companies, organisations and institutions in more than 80 countries, including manufacturers, developers, component suppliers, research institutes, national wind and renewables associations, electricity providers, finance and insurance companies.

Our members are also all of the national wind industry trade associations, from both established and emerging markets, including the world largest markets of the United States, all the European markets, India and China.

GWEC works at the highest international political level to create a better policy environment for wind power. GWEC and its members are active all over the world, educating local and national governments and international agencies about the benefits of wind power.

Working with the UNFCCC, REN21, the IEA, international financial institutions, the IPCC and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), GWEC represents the global wind industry to show how far we’ve come, but also to advocate new policies to help wind power reach its full potential in as wide a variety of markets as possible.

We are funded by membership fees from our company and association members.
